This is for all the idea-geeks out there who’ve been wanting to launch that brilliant, innovative, new, fresh web 2.0 application, design agency or development company but got stuck where 90% of the people do. Funding.

So here’s 5 simple steps that have done magic for our company.

1. Don’t be afraid.

Statistics say 90% of the people prefer a smaller but safe income than try something on their own. Statistics also say that 50% of the businesses get flushed out the toilet. So I guess that fear is justified, ha? Well, if you ask me, it isn’t. How do you know you’re business isn’t going to work if you don’t start one. Go ahead. Work on your smart idea. Make a business plan. Focus on what you have to do rather than what you’d like to do. Compromise.

2. Get money in.

You’d like to invest some money but you don’t have them, ha? No problem. Our days, all it takes is a website and a few referrals to get you rolling. Build that nifty presentation website. Print your short and clear business plan. Talk to your parents, friends, colleagues. See if they’re interested in joining you on your new adventure.

After you have some money in, say… 500 dollars, start looking for web design clients (people/companies that need websites). You don’t know how to build websites? No problem, we’ll get to that part too. Bid on freelancing websites. Post announcements in the newspaper. Do everything you can to get that first client. The rest will follow.

Ok, so after you get that first web design client, how do you build his website? Well, outsourcing. Find a Romanian, Indian, whatever company that will build it, for a lot less money you’re going to get from the client, I can assure you. You’ll see that the 500 dollars you spend on outsourcing will triple after your first project. Nice, ha?

4. Don’t spend what you earn

Working with outsourcing companies brings you a big advantage: you don’t have any expenses. No programmers/designers to pay, no office rent, nothing. Just pure profit.

Raise the money for that nifty web 2.0 application or whatever project you want to launch. When you think you have enough, outsource the project. Get the same company that has worked for your clients’ projects work for you now.

5. And if you only want an IT company that builds websites, creates web, desktop or mobile apps…

…stick to outsourcing. Get a good western Project Manager that will be the interface between your Company and your Clients. Take advantage of the internet and develop all your projects with Outsourcing Companies. It’s the best thing an IT Company can do.

What Makes Podcasting Different

When the signs of a new technology for developing web content appeared, nobody was aware about its growth speed. Now, after months, the podcasting (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Podcasting) is going to be more and more popular and new publishers are developing content, based on this technology. They have found this method intuitive and attractive to clients. But regardless of the fascinating aspects of multimedia content, what other options make the podcasting different than other methods of providing and publishing content? Here, I have listed five major differences. Perhaps, at the time that you read this article, as this technology is going to be more mature day by day, new reasons could be added to my list. I leave it to the readers’ interests to search for new options.

In spite of other known methods of delivering content which are mostly based on Push technology, the podcasting is based on pull technology. In push technology, the content is delivered, directed from the source to the consumer. The consumer has no control over it. For example, when a radio channel starts at a specific time, follows based on a predefined and fixed program and ends at a specific time, the consumer has no chance or permission to alter any part of it. If you lose a part of the program, you won’t be able to re-listen to it. You can not rewind it, stop it and think a while about the subject then re-play it. This is push technology. But, if you could have control of the flow of the content, it would be pull. The consumer selects the content and controls it. Podcasting is a kind of pull technology. You download selected content and use it based on your own desire and full control over the flow of content.

However there are many notifying and automatic content syndication utilities, but you should always surf different websites for different content. This is your responsibility, as the consumer of the content, to go and visit the source of the content, on a website. But podcasting removes this step. Just one time, for ever, you choose your desire radio channel, news feed, poet channel or else. Then the aggregation software would be responsible to deliver the most recent casts right in your mobile MP3 player. After a while, you would even forget the address of websites and just listening to the downloaded up to date content would be your daily fashion.

Internet connection is not that much easy to be available every time and every where. So, using web contents would be impossible in many cases. When you are driving, climbing, resting and walking in the morning, you would be deprived of having access to web content. No web log, no web surfing, no radio channel and else. But, the downloaded podcasts are available in the MP3 player which could be accessible to you in different occasions and places, making casts ready to use. No laptop and phone line to connect to the Internet is needed. No clean place to sit and use your PC for surfing the web sites is required. Everything is loaded in your tiny MP3 player which is able to play hours without any need to electricity plugged.

The device for using podcasts is a tiny, every time and everywhere available MP3 player. The iPod is a brand which is owned by Apple company. It is why this technology is called Podcasting. The Pod is derived from iPod and cast from Broadcast. The iPod is not the only MP3 device that could be used. Just a personal computer with very basic multimedia capabilities, like, microphone input, audio output and software to record voice, combine with background music and convert to low quality and small size MP3 format. Then you need just a FTP account for uploading the MP3s. A very basic knowledge about RSS 2.0 standards is also required. For this last option, you can use current available feeds and alter them for your own needs. I just started using this method, as learning RSS 2.0 needs times. I copied an already created RSS file and edited it based on my own needs and it worked without having enough knowledge. To download your podcasts, the consumer should install very basic aggregator software, one like iPodder (http://ipodder.sourceforge.net) which is free. And finally a MP3 player software like iTune (http://www.itune.com) or Microsoft Media Player which is already installed on Windows operating systems.

Podcasting, like web logging, is rapidly growing and every day, new podcasts in different fields, from poetry to technology, from training to radio channels are being created and published on the Internet. There are special directories and websites that index podcasts and podcasting websites. You can start from one of these directories and reach hundreds and thousands available and known podcasts on the Internet. One of these directories is http://www.podcast.net which has categorized podcasts in a directory structure. It could be a good start point for your adventure.

The Universal Serial Bus (USB) was first launched in 1996 by a group of IT Companies known as the USB Promoter Group.

This first version was known as USB 1.1 and was a standardized serial connection that aimed to provide a replacement for parallel and serial ports. Intended for mid-speed and slow computer peripherals, it created an intelligent serial bus.

In the early years, many people utilized USB on their own computers and it proved to work well for most applications. In recent years, however, USB 1.1 has proved to be too limited. While USB 1.1 managed to remain useful to more modern technologies, some loopholes in the initial version were pointed as the source of major problems.

USB 1.1 was limited with a slower transference rate of only 12-megabits/ sec. During the rise of the USB 1.1 in the market, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineer (IEEE) unveiled the FireWire, also called i.LINK(tm), which had a transfer speed of 400 blazing megabytes per second, then considered a fantastic rate of transfer. This transfer speed made the uploading of a full motion video from a camcorder convenient. It threatened to push USB 1.1 out of the market, as it was not able to compete with this newcomer.

The creation of increasingly sophisticated gadgets and peripherals spotlighted the limitations of the original version of USB. USB 1.1 was not able to fully support the speeds needed to run gadgets like digital movie or video players, mobile phones, video phones, Web cameras, digital cameras, MP3s or digital music players, PDAs and Palmtops.

When USB 2.0 version debuted, with 40 times the speed of the previous version, it offered the capacity to operate most of the newly released technologies.

One of the most important features of USB 2.0 is that it is backward compatible. In other words, USB 2.0 hardware can be plugged to computer’s old USB 1.1 port and will function properly because both versions use same plug. USB 2.0 can transmit data at speeds between 1.5 megabits to 480 megabits per second, but if USB 2.0 hardware is connected to a USB 1.1 port it will not attempt to transmit data at its maximum speed of 480 megabits per second. Rather, it will slow it’s rate of transmission in order to operate properly and compatibly with the older hardware.

Upgrading a computer to include USB 2.0 ports into a computer is a simple procedure. When USB 2.0 ports are added with a PCI port card, the original USB 1.1 ports are retained and will continue to function normally.

Both USB 2.0 and 1.1 are plug and play. Once a USB device is connected to the host computer, the system will automatically recognizes it. The drivers will then be installed and the system can begin operating the new hardware without the necessity of a reboot. The upgraded technology of USB 2.0 also allows the connection capacity of a single computer to a very large number of devices at once: 127 to be exact.

Both USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 have become vital instruments in connecting devices and computers together. If things continue as they have begun, USB will become even faster and more efficient in years to come.

It took seven months to get the One Million Masterpiece charity project online. The site is complex and needed the development time, but in the last few days I’ve had a yearning to see if I can still turn around a project in 24 hours. Back in the early days of the Internet boom I’d sit in my bedroom and knock out html websites all night long, but almost ten years on, can it still be done in a time where profitability and interactivity are the key measures?

So, it’s 7am and I’ve got a plan. The new pressures I face in life (work responsibilities, family etc) have been dealt with and I have a clear 24 hours ahead of me. An idea for a site has been kicking round in my head ever since I sold a site last year. This site was a very specialist software comparison site that generated referral commissions and Adsense income. It was an excellent earner and I’ve wanted to recreate that success, but on a larger scale.

So last year I bought the domain http://www.shoutdown.net with the intention of building a software comparison style project. I want the site to be in the informal blog style, where the posts are product summaries (written by me), and the comments would be reviews submitted by other people. I’d also throw in a rating system, and way of attaching news releases or other relevant pages to each product post, plus link related posts (for example different versions of the same software).

So the idea is there, it’s 7:30am and my first job is to select some mp3’s to get me through to lunch. Here goes…

By the time I’ve chosen my music, switched off my Google desktop bar and responded to essential email it’s already 8am – crap. So, first job is drawing out a schematic of the database that will power my site. What information do I want to keep and how will I organise it? I’m having five database tables. For ease I’m calling them level1, level2, level3 etc because I see them as levels of information about each software product – the top being category information and the bottom being the reviews and ratings.

Took me quite a while to get the structure clear, but now I’m sketching out the homepage on paper. I’ve looked at a few blogs that I like and have basically copied their layout for ease. I’ve also worked out the sizing of my main columns and rows and know the positions of the adverts, main blog posts and navigation. I still like to work on paper at this stage – I’m an artist at heart!

OK let’s get on the computer. I’ve fired up Paint Shop Pro and my first job is to work out a colour pallet. I want three colours, so I blob different combinations on a blank white image until I get the right combination – orange, purple and grey. I then make a note of the hex codes for each colour on a post-it – this will save LOADS of time later. While I’m in PSP I’m going to mock up a logo as I already know the size of image I need from my plan. Actually I really like the logo so it will probably be permanent.

Time to start on the site. I’m using a single html page at the moment with a linked css file. Using some basic tables and css I’ve laid out the top bar, the post area and two columns (one for ads and one for navigation). I’m sticking to a tried and tested blog layout.

I always use Dreamweaver, but always hand code. Why use Dreamweaver then? Well, I find the preview quite accurate, but other than that I have no idea – just habit.

I’ve just finished the main site layout, including place holding text that will eventually be dynamic. I’ve left space for some ads on the site, so I’ve justed logged in to Adsense to generate the code. All I need to do is use the colours on my post-it to get them fitting in nicely. I’ll also take a look round for some other nice banners in my affiliate accounts.

OK time to fill up my database with some data, then I can start writing the php that will populate the pages. I’m going to sign up for a few software affiliate accounts and write some sample reviews on the software. At the moment I haven’t got time to write really good reviews, but in time I intend to fully try each title and write some good stuff (positive and negative). For now I’ll be brief.

This isn’t working. I’ve got a very limited knowledge of php so I’m having trouble dynamically generating category headings and software lists dynamically. It’s taking too long to sort out so for now I’m going to simply print a list of all software titles in the database. I’ll make up for it by also providing a list of software categories, plus a list of the most reviewed software.

I’m going to split up my single html page now into a header, body, nav and footer, and use a php include to pull the pages together. In total I will only need three main template pages for the content of this site – the homepage, a category page and a product page.

I’ve finished the layout of the three pages, including all the code that pulls info from the database. Everything’s working pretty well and I’m please with the simplicity. My next job is to create an rss feed of the posts and reviews, but first I need some DINNER!

After some pasta and tv I’m ready for this rss feed. It’s pretty easy to create a php page that will pull the necessary code and place it in the rss 2.0 layout. Once I’m done I’ll just save the php file as xml and ensure that my .htaccess file remembers to parse xml files for php code.

I checked that the rss feed was valid using a standard validator. It took a little time to sort out the date formatting to be honest.

I’ve been developing using Firefox to test the layout, but I just checked the site in IE and noticed the background colour was dodgy. It was a css error – fixed.

OK back to content. The reviews at the moment are boring so I’m going to add some images and expand them a little. I’m also going to add some reviews that I’ve been collecting over the last few months. The good thing about buying the domain and posting up a test website for six months is that the search engines have already crawled the site, and hopefully will help me avoid the Google sandbox.

I’m absolutely knackered. I’ve just spent the last few hours trying to get the navigation system working but with no luck. The problem is that I’m trying to dynamically generate an information tree (apparently that’s what it’s called after much research) but I just can’t get it working. I’m giving up.

OK, I’ve just created a rating system which will only accept one software vote per IP address. Seems a bit buggy but I really really tired and can’t be bothered to go through it again now.

So what’s left to do? I need to create forms to input reviews, news and bookmarks but I’m just too tired to continue. So much for 24 hours, but actually I’m really pleased with the result. On the surface the site looks like any other blog, and you might question why I decided to hand code the entire thing. Well, I have some ideas for some advanced functions, but I’ll only be able to implement them if I know the site inside out. Plus I just like the challenge.

I wont have time to work on the site all week, but I’m already planning my next 24 hour session – marketing. I’ll be sure to keep you updated on that, and how the site is doing generally!
